The Medical Selection Admissions Test - Ulster (MSAT-Ulster) is a 2 hour 40 min computer based multiple-choice assessment independently developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to assist with the selection of students into medicine and health profession degree programmes.

Important dates

  • Create an MSAT-Ulster account, schedule your test before 5:00pm GMT, 5 February 2025
  • Late registrations close 5:00pm GMT, 12 February 2025
  • MSAT-Ulster test days: 8 and 9 March 2025

MSAT-Ulster Quick reference

MSAT-Ulster will be offered in test centres at the Ulster University campuses for all test takers located in Northern Ireland. For those test takers located internationally please contact the MSAT-Ulster Office for advice.

You will be required to create an account and set up a login. It is important to make sure that you remember your login details as you will use this account to: 

  • access your admission ticket;
  • log into your test;
  • access your results.


Registrations should be completed by 5pm, GMT on 5 February 2025, to avoid the late fee. Late registrations will be accepted with payment of a late fee of £35 and will close 5pm, 12 February 2025. Registrations after this time cannot be accepted, all applicants that fail to register before the close of late registrations will have to wait until the 2026 before they have the opportunity to register and sit MSAT-Ulster again.

Critical Reasoning

Critical Reasoning (CR) – involves comprehending and analysing information; understanding, applying, and extending ideas; drawing appropriate conclusions, and evaluating arguments. These questions use material from the humanities and social sciences.

Quantitative Reasoning

Quantitative Reasoning (QR) – involves analysis and application of information, drawing conclusions, making decisions, and solving problems. These questions use material from the mathematics and sciences.

Interpersonal Understanding

Interpersonal Understanding (IU) - involves the ability to understand and think about people. These questions are based on a scenario, dialogue or other text representing specific interpersonal situations. Using a multiple-choice format, they assess your ability to identify, understand, and, where necessary, infer the thoughts, feelings, behaviour and/or intentions of the people represented in the interpersonal situations.
