Test format

The purpose of MSAT-Ulster is not to test your knowledge of specific academic subjects, it is to test your skills in the interpretation and understanding of ideas presented in a variety of ways. MSAT-Ulster questions typically require you to read and think about a passage of writing, to interpret graphical displays of information, to use mathematical relationships, to reason about data and use your ability to understand the thoughts, behaviours and/or intentions of people.

The test has a strong focus on the general skills and personal abilities identified as important in a competent health professional.

Test-taking strategy

Questions in the MSAT-Ulster are in multiple-choice format.

Tips for working through questions:

  • There is no right or wrong way to complete MSAT-Ulster. It is best for you to develop your own strategies that suit your way of working.
  • We recommend that you work steadily through each question. It is not advisable to spend too much time on any one question.
  • If you think you know the answer to a question, mark it, even if you are not certain. Go on to the next question and come back later if you have time.

Points to note:

  • All questions have the same value. Attempt as many questions as possible in order to maximise your score.
  • There is only one correct answer; marks are not deducted for incorrect answers.
